Be proud, Delians!

Dr. Sonata Yau, Assistant Professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was the Guest of Honour of our Sports Day on April 1st (Friday).

You should all be proud because Dr. Sonata Yau was a graduate of Delia Memorial School (Glee Path) in 2000. She has worked very hard and overcome a lot of challenges to accomplish her achievements today.

Sonata completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2005. She then got her PhD degree in Neuroscience in Department of Anatomy, The University of Hong Kong in 2009. Before she joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, she received a postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Hong Kong between 2009 and 2012, followed by another postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Medical Sciences at The University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada in 2012.

She has done a lot of challenging researches with particular interests in investigating the effects of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions on promoting brain plasticity. Her current research projects are centered on the hippocampus, a brain region important for learning and memory. She investigates the underlying mechanisms of physical exercise-induced hippocampal plasticity in disease animal models (e.g depression and mental retardation), and identifying its related biomarkers for translational research in humans.

Sonata always has a positive attitude and demonstrates to all of us at Delia how one can use his/her education and knowledge and make this a better and brighter world.

“I strongly believe that only those who are willing to face challenges and are strongly motivated and hardworking can be successful. Though we may not be able to change the situation, we can always change our mindsets to overcome difficulties.”

Dr. Sonata Yau
